Frequently Asked Questions

What are the teams available at Spike?
We offer one team at each of the following age levels for boys: 11/12's, 13s, 14s, 15s, 16s,17s and 18's. On a case-by-case basis we may add a second team at a certain age group if the demand and staffing are available.
How much does the club cost?
The club dues for the 2020-21 season are $900 for 14s-18s, $725 for 13s, and $700 for 11/12s. There will be two installments. The first installment of $550 is due no later than December 10th. The remaining balance is due by February 1. All checks can be made payable to Spike Milwaukee VBC. The dues include tournament entry fees, insurance, coaches stipends, equipment and gym rental. Additionally, players will be responsible for purchasing a uniform package of about $115. The only additional out-of-pocket expense you may incur will be if we stay overnight for a tournament. In that case, you will need to pay for a hotel. In addition, though not mandatory, the teams in the past like to purchase “spirit wear”.
What is the process to get on a team?
Interested players must attend at least 1 tryout date for a team they wish to participate on. All 40 regions of USA Volleyball use a player’s birthday, not grade, to determine what age-level the player can participate in during the club season. A player can choose to compete in an older age division than his own but cannot choose to compete in a younger age division. Click here to visit the Badger Region website that has the age definitions spelled out.

During or after the tryout process, an "offer" will be made by the coach or club director to signify a position on the team is reserved for that player.  Players with offers must adhere to the decision timeline outlined by badger region.
Does spike accept age waivers?
If your son meets the criteria for an age waiver, Spike will definitely consider him for a roster spot.  According to the Badger Region, you must show proof of grade and birthday to prove that you will be playing in the same grade as your peers.  Age waivers will be limited to a maximum of two per team.
When are tryouts?
Tryouts for 11-14's is October 3rd and 4th. Tryouts for 15-18's is November 14th-15th.  See the Tryout page for specific times.
How many players are on a team?
Normally our coaches strive to have 10-12 players on their teams.  As a result, there is ample opportunity for your son to get play time so you will see your child compete in all of the tournaments they go to!
When do teams practice?
Each team practices twice a week.  Usually it will be on Sunday evenings and a Monday, Wednesday or Thursday during the week. Typically practices are 1.5 hrs to 2.0 hrs in length.  Navigate to the desired team from the top menu to find out specific times and locations.
Where are practices held?
We are currently using the Adversity Training Center in Germantown, however we may add a second practice facility in Wauwatosa.
How many tournaments will be scheduled?
Our tournament schedule includes 8 tournament days for 14s-18s, 7 tournament days for 13s, and 6 tournament days for 11/12s. Usually, the 13s & 11/12s will also be a part of the Badger Boys Series ("league play" with local clubs). Some teams will also offer the opportunity to participate in the Boys Winter Volleyball Championships in Chicago as an optional add-on tournament.  Each team's page will spell out the season plan with tournaments and schedule.
Where will the tournaments be located?
Each season is different, but generally the tournaments will be located in the Milwaukee, Chicago, or Fox Valley area. Specific tournament playing sites will sometimes be disclosed when the schedule is released about 1 week prior to the tournament.
How much pLaying time can be expected for players on the team?
Equal playing time is difficult to judge because of the various positions on the court.  Having said that, we vow to give each player fair playing time.  In other words, you can expect to see your son play in every tournament.  We strive to make sure that each player gets an ample amount of playing time to improve their skills
What type of coaches are involved with spike?
We pride ourselves in having quality coaches to give your son a positive and productive volleyball experience. Many are involved or have been involved in coaching area high school boys and/or girls volleyball teams. Every one of our coaches stands behind Spikes club philosophy and pledge of ethics.  To learn more about our coaches, visit Our Staff page.
Do I get to play for spike again next year if i made a team this past year?
Beginning with the 2019/2020 club season the Badger Region has instituted a new player retention policy. Spike has chosen not to participate in the retention program for the 2020-21 season.
How Can parents help out with the team?
We encourage any parents to come forward and serve as a "team parent." This minor volunteer leadership role would include but not be limited to helping organize any team events throughout the season, serving as a communication hub during tournaments for other parents and players, and being a positive model in audience.

Also, the Badger Region offers a parent program called Serve United. During the season, this parent/adult can contribute to the success of the club and ease some stress on the team if they’re able to step in and give a player a break to eat, rehydrate or rest.
What are your covid-19 policies?
  • Masks will be required at practices and tournaments during the season unless further health guidelines are issued.
  • Hand sanitizer will be available at our practice facility, but it is strongly encouraged to bring your own.
  • We ask that all athletes hand sanitize or wash hands for 20 seconds upon entering the practice facility/tournament before AND after the event.
  • Athletes that are sick or not feeling well should NOT come to any club activities.
  • Please notify your coach and club director if you do discover a case of COVID within your household, if you have been exposed or are on a quarantine.
  • If there is a quarantine due to Covid-19 in your household, please contact your local Health Department to find out when you are safe to return to play.
  • If your school does not allow you to come to school due to a Covid-19 quarantine, you are not allowed to come to a practice/tournament for Spike Milwaukee.
